Here I will be displaying my work on the subject of DeBeL, my mascot character of sorts. In a way she represents my basis of what I’m good at, which is pretty much drawing linws.

Thumbnails

one of the big takeaways from college was the art of thumbnail making. I fucking hated it, but it actually provided a great way to scribble down ideas over and over until something good comes to mind. It’s great way of brainstorming for artists. This thumbnail sketch as dumb as it looks was the start of a very long branding project that still has been evolving over the years.

At first the concept behind DeBeL was that she was supposed to look scary, sickly, and more or less what type of feeling a homunculus would give off.

This is one of the first character design reference sheets I drew up for DeBeL, this was back when I still primarily drew on paper. Although much about this design has already changed a lot. I still like certain aspects, even some of the elements that I removed completely. I actually think drawing digitally helped change alot about her design.

The current design state for DeBeL.

Here is the most up to date design for DeBeL. The biggest changes here are a more concrete design style, which a lot stems from wanting her to be more friendly and cute rather than, scary and friendly.

Simplifying her features became more fun to draw as her head is nearly a complete circle with an eye shade, that almost look like some fancy sunglasses. Her hair has also been changed a lot. It might not have translated well, but her hair originally was supposed to be more of fleshy black membrane that acted more alive than her now much more normal hair.

Despite many people drawing her eyes, misunderstanding not being able to see her eyes are part of the character! I imagine her having horrible terribly looking eyes… that are cute!

Now her design has gotten quite small! Nothing has really changed since her previous design. I’d like to think that older design could be more or less a slightly older version.

However this is the DeBeL that many of the characters in the story will meet and interact with.
