Plane Girls
This was a short project that is still open for new entries, The concept is simple and not very original but nonetheless it is still very fun to create new characters, based on the statistics and attributes of specific aircraft. Most of the entries revolve around World War II era aircraft. These aircraft have a lot of history and stories tied to them which also helped design the respective characters.
Black Widow…
A new addition to the plane girl illustrations. I had been wanting to the P-61 for some time now but finally I was able to sit down and do so (or rather forced to…)
I went with a more appropriate clothing design this time around. I think the seriousness of such a machine deserves that. It’s appearance is a bit misleading with it’s less than desired performance against other aircraft it saw combat against but did it really need it, when you stalking your prey in the night?
This was the first sketch I did during one of the many slow days at my boring job… I had in mind some other artists design they did with an Osprey. Couldn’t quite remember it but I knew generally what I wanted I guess.
Here’s some more old sketches for the same design
As much as I love how this illustration turned out, I cannot excuse the previous attempt… As you can see there is a marginal difference in quality. This highlights the slow but constant improvements that artists strive for.
It also shows how slow I am to work on projects… it’s been so long I’ve gotten better
Here’s some general knowledge on the SB2C
The Curtiss SB2C-2 Helldiver was a naval diver bomber aimed at replacing the older SBD-3 Dauntless of the same role. In reality it earned the nick name “Son of a bitch 2nd class” due it’s general underperformance compared to the plane it was supposed to be replacing.
Being a naval aircraft, having folding wings is standard practice, as illustrated above. It was very useful as space could not be wasted on the small decks of aircraft carriers.
FUN FACT: Her weapon is based of a real life modification of the M1919
She is equipped with a “Stinger” a marine designed, and jury rigged version of the M1919. Scrapped from other downed naval planes in the pacific theatre, it was used to clear out Japanese bunkers and fortifications, with it’s incredible rate of fire. This was due to aircraft machine guns needing a much higher rate of fire dealing with high speed opponents.
An unfinished “painting” of new design. “Emily” a P-38,no specific variant, as the paint scheme is loosely based of a common pacific theatre livery.
The P-38 is one of my favorite designs, it works well this concept even more than other single engine aircraft, and probably more than the few twin engine fighters at the time.
I plan to return to this once i’ve gotten a better understanding of rendering.
Here’s another design from the same batch of sketches on the SB2C.
This lady is based on the German JU-87
Specifically the JU-87 G2 the tank busting attacker variant.
I designed the accompanying girl of the Junkers(JU-87) keeping in mind the mostly likely tired and over worked pilots of the Luftwaffe. I gave her a pretty standard assortment of clothes, I tried to stay away from flowy garments since It could be a hazard. I especially like the Knee pads, that represent the fixed landing gear fairings of the Ju-87.
She is also equipped with a MG 13, although not historically accurate I found it a much more distinctive gun compared to the historical MG 81.
I’ve been very busy as of late, but I’m really excited to do a proper updated illustration for her. I’d also like to work on the other designs I’ve started but haven’t completed.
I can’t ignore my unwavering bias for North American aviation in WW2, but I must give other magnificent designs their deserved glory.
